Data privacy is a genuine, ongoing concern: mental-health-adjacent apps and devices have repeatedly been found sharing user data with third parties in ways not clearly disclosed to users, and regulatory oversight in this space is still catching up to the technology. Device accuracy also varies considerably. With thousands of wearables now on the market, quality control is inconsistent, and a device that misreads a sleep stage or a stress spike can create false confidence or unnecessary alarm in either direction.

None of this means the category isn’t worth using. It means treating any single device’s output as one useful data point, not a diagnosis, and pairing it with genuine behaviour change rather than passive data collection alone.

The device on your wrist can show you the pattern. It can’t do the work of changing it. That part still depends on sleep, movement, time in nature, real connection, and, when needed, a trained professional, wearable or not.
